Project Overview & Raw Water Chemistry

Globaluf’s engineering team recently completed the live commissioning and formal handover of a custom industrial groundwater purification plant in Johor, Malaysia. Extracted from a 270m deep borehole, the raw water carries heavy concentrations of mud, silt, and sand, resulting in persistent turbidity levels consistently exceeding 50NTU.

Step-by-Step Chemical Dosing & Process Logic

To prevent rapid membrane fouling and ensure continuous operation, Globaluf implemented a 3-stage pre-treatment and filtration chain:

Stage 1: Chemical Coagulation & Lamella Clarification

  • Primary Dosing Tank (Coagulation): Polyaluminum Chloride (PAC) is dosed to bind colloidal particles. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) is added to optimize pH for maximum flocculation efficiency, alongside Sodium Hypochlorite (NaClO) for microbial disinfection.
  • Secondary Dosing Tank (Flocculation): Polyacrylamide (PAM) is introduced to expand floc size.
  • Inclined Plate Settler (Lamella Clarifier): Water flows through a honeycomb lamella media basin where heavy flocs settle out rapidly, dropping raw turbidity from > 50NTU to under 1.0NTU.

Stage 2: Ultrafiltration (UF) Membrane Barrier

Clarified water is stored in a 6m3 buffer tank before being pumped into hollow-fiber UF modules. The 0.01um pore size blocks residual suspended solids, colloidal silica, and bacteria, maintaining a Silt Density Index (SDI below 3.0).

Stage 3: Reverse Osmosis (RO) Desalination

The UF permeate feeds into the RO skid where high-pressure pumps force water through semi-permeable membranes. Operating live at an inlet conductivity of 652uS/cm (pH =8.0), the system achieved an exceptional 7.29uS/cm permeate conductivity (98.9% desalination rate) with a neutral pH of 7.0.
